Example quarter Erfurt Oststadt
The example quarter Oststadt is part of the district Krämpfervorstadt in the east of Erfurt. In the west of Oststadt, the old town and current center of the city is situated. To the east, fallow land and garden plots (allotment gardens) are located close to the Oststadt. The urban development is mainly characterized by buildings with four to five floors and block structures from the 19th century. In northern parts of the Oststadt, buildings of the Bauhaus-era (Hamburger Block, Flensburger Block) and expressionism are common. In southern parts, old workings class buildings are predominant.
The local urban climate is characterized by moderate and strong thermal heat stress in summer due to the densely built structure and a lack of urban green. Generally, the supply of fresh and cold air via circulation and ventilation lanes is reduced compared to the western parts of Erfurt.
In the near future, the Oststadt will be the largest urban development area. An increase to more than 4.000 units of accommodation is predicted for the quarter. Therefore, the size of cold and fresh air development areas will be further reduced.
Due to this urban transformation process as well as to climate change, today's urban climate will be further altered and heat stress during summer increased in the future.
